Before I dive into these infused water combos, I wanted to share a little bit of my nutritional background in hopes it might help one of you! A couple of years ago, I had to really change my eating habits after finding out I have reactive hypoglycemia. For those of you who don’t know what it is, it’s basically the opposite of diabetes, where the the amount of sugar you intake can cause severe drops in glucose levels a couple of hours after eating a meal. The more sugar and simple carbs (which turn into sugar) that you eat, the worse you’ll feel. It’s a vicious cycle and one that really forced me to put my daily nutrition under a microscope.
In some ways, I feel thankful to have experienced those struggles because it really helped me to prepare my body nutritionally for pregnancy. I cut out SO much sugar across the board, even doing a Whole30 in the early stages and then reintroducing healthy amounts. But friends, it’s not easy! It means looking at labels all. the. time, skipping out on sweets or eating just a few bites of dessert, breaking up with soda, coffee (caffeine affects it too!) and cutting way down on simple carbs like white bread and pasta. But the end result is so worth it and you actually start to crave healthy foods.
I really wanted to share a bit of my story with you if you are trying to cut down on sugar, I know how hard it is! With all of that said, finding alternate options to keep myself happy was so, so important. Let’s face it, food does affect our mood. A really fun way to satisfy sugar and flavor cravings is infusing your water.
Shortly after becoming pregnant, my water intake skyrocketed and even more so in this last trimester. I don’t even keep track of how many glasses I drink per day now, but it’s quite a bit. So I really enjoy fancying it up a bit—infusing water is also a great alternative for when you’re craving a fun cocktail! Try with sparkling if you want a bit more zing, too. Below are a few of my go-to combos, plus some of my favorite infusing water bottles and regular ones!
RASPBERRIES, BLUEBERRIES + PINEAPPLE
This one is great for those on-the-go days because there’s no slicing involved (if you buy precut pineapple). This tropical combo is also my favorite for those days I’m craving a bit more sugar. I’ll usually refill my water a couple times before eating the fruit at the end!
BLOOD ORANGE, MINT + CUCUMBER
Blood oranges are a great source of folic acid, vitamin C, calcium and vitamin A, making this one a great combo for expecting mamas. I also love Cara Cara oranges if I can’t find blood oranges!
STRAWBERRY, LIME + BASIL
My absolute favorite cocktail is a strawberry margarita, so this is a fun one to satisfy my cravings. The basil adds a nice peppery touch.
PEACH, BLACKBERRY + DRAGONFRUIT
One of my biggest cravings during this pregnancy has been peaches and nectarines. I loved them to begin with, but this little babe seems to make me love them even more. If you can find in your local grocer, dragonfruit is also great for your skin, too!
I absolutely love my Drop Bottle (shown here), which is made of glass and has a little strainer insert to prevent your infusing ingredients from coming to the top as you drink.
I also love my Bobble for on the go and for nighttime since it’s made of plastic and is a bit easier to drink from with the pop top and squeeze feature. The hole is a bit smaller than the Drop Bottle, so this is great for infusing smaller things like berries and tiny slices.
For regular water (without infusing) I also love this S’well stainless steel bottle.
Shawn and I also love our 32 oz. bkr bottles for holding larger amounts of water. I love that they’re made of glass but have a protective grippy silicone layer on the outside.
